We Need Your Help!
Hello, friends and supporters of UMBC Mock Trial,
We are asking for your help as we prepare for our eighth competitive season. We're fundraising to attend some of the best Mock Trial tournaments in the country, and we can't get there without some additional funding.
What is UMBC Mock Trial?
Mock Trial is a courtroom simulation in which two teams composed of three attorneys and three witnesses compete against one another. Each team presents an opening statement, a closing argument, three direct examinations, and three cross examinations. This fantastic experience allows our team of 30+ future lawyers and scholars to develop and hone vital critical thinking and public speaking skills, and showcases UMBC's academic excellence to the rest of the country.
Over the last several seasons, the UMBC Mock Trial program has proudly represented our school at tournaments across the country. The past two seasons have been especially successful. In 2018, we earned two bids to the National Semifinals for the second year in a row, and we are now the highest ranked Mock Trial team in the state of Maryland! This is on the heels of our 2017 season, where we earned our first-ever bid to the National Championship Tournament, as one of only 48 teams in the country out of 700+ to advance to the third and final round of the Mock Trial playoffs.
Every Mock Trial season consists of invitational tournaments in the fall semester and American Mock Trial Association (AMTA) playoff tournaments in the spring semester. Invitational tournaments consume the majority of our budget as we have to pay both the invitational fee to the hosting school and hotel costs for overnight trips.
What do we need?
This coming season, we have been invited to some of the most high-profile invitational tournaments in the country, including:
- Yale: December 1-2, 2018
- Virginia: December 1-2, 2018
- Columbia: October 20-21, 2018
- Cornell: January 19-20, 2019
- Duke: November 3-4, 2018
- Haverford (Philadelphia): November 10-11, 2018
- William & Mary: October 27-28, 2018
- Georgetown: January 26-27, 2019
We are working hard to prepare for this busy season, but we need your help to attend these amazing invitational tournaments. Each of the tournaments has registration fees and most of the tournaments require multiple overnight stays. Now that we are a nationally recognized team, we have the opportunity to compete at the best invitational tournaments against elite teams across the country, but our current funding is not enough to cover this additional travel that is crucial to our competitive success. Through your generosity we can continue to build a program that will represent UMBC with pride across the nation.
your donation will double!
Through the incredible generosity of a private donor, we can match every donation you give, dollar for dollar, up to $2,500.00! This means that if you give us $50, we'll turn it into $100! If you give us $100, we'll turn it into $200! Please consider making a donation to help us reach our goal so we can use the full extent of our matching donation and travel to these amazing tournaments across the country.
Where will the money go?
The UMBC College of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences, Provost and Finance Board have generously provided some funding-- but we need to make up the gap in order to attend two of our most expensive tournaments: Yale and Cornell.
Your gift today will help us pay for the registration fees and lodging reservation for these fast-approaching events. Any additional funds will be used to purchase demonstrative exhibits, other trial materials, and additional lodging for members of our team.
- Yale Registration: $200
- Yale Lodging: $1000
- Cornell Registration: $200
- Cornell Lodging: $1100
- Total: $2500
Your donation will help us continue our success and continue our growth as a team. We can't do this without your help!
Although a donation would be appreciated, you don't need to give us money to help us succeed! We'll be sharing this campaign all over social media - on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and our website - and you can share this project with anyone you think would support us. If you have any questions, feel free to email us at UMBCMockTrial@UMBC.edu.
We love competing for UMBC at tournaments across the country - help us get there!
All funds raised are administered by the UMBC Foundation for the benefit of UMBC.
