We need your help!
Hello, friends and supporters of UMBC Mock Trial!
Last year, we came so close. We were just a few narrow ballots away from competing in the final round at the 2019 National Championship Tournament. 750+ teams started the season, and we were one of the last four teams with a chance to be in the final round. We need your help so we can travel to the best tournaments in the country this year and try to win the National Championship.
What is UMBC Mock Trial?
Mock Trial a courtroom simulation activity. Two teams comprised of three attorneys and three witnesses compete against each other in a single trial. Each team presents an opening statement, three direct examinations, three cross examinations, and a closing argument. This fantastic experience allows our team of 30+ future lawyers, scholars and leaders to develop and hone vital critical thinking and public speaking skills, and showcases UMBC's academic excellence to the rest of the country.
Over the past several years, UMBC Mock Trial has experienced a meteoric rise, and we are now recognized as one of the best Mock Trial programs in the country. Last season, we came in 8th place in our division and 13th place overall at the National Championship Tournament. This means that we finished in the top-15 nationwide out of over 750+ teams! We are the highest ranked Mock Trial program in Maryland, and we won multiple tournaments last season, including Georgetown's tournament (where we went undefeated) and Duke's tournament (where we lost only one ballot). We will begin the 2019-20 season as the 24th-ranked team in the country.
Every Mock Trial season consists of two types of tournaments: invitationals and AMTA playoffs. In the fall and late winter, we travel to "invitationals" around the country hosted by different schools. These take up a majority of our budget, as they are crucial to our preparation. Starting in February, the American Mock Trial Association (AMTA) hosts three rounds of nationwide playoff tournaments. Our goal this year is the same as it is every year: to advance to the final tournament of the year, the National Championship Tournament.
What do we need?
This year, we have been invited to the best invitational tournaments in the country. Here's a few examples:
Duke: November 2 & 3, 2019
Haverford (Philadelphia): November 9 & 10, 2019
Virginia: November 23 & 24, 2019
Columbia: January 18 & 19, 2020
Chicago: January 25-27, 2020
Georgetown: January 26 & 27, 2020
We are working hard to prepare for this busy season, but we need your help to attend these amazing invitational tournaments. Each of the tournaments charge registration fees, and most of the tournaments require multiple overnight stays. As one of the nation's best teams, we have the opportunity to compete at the best invitational tournaments against fellow elite teams across the country, but our current funding is not enough to cover this crucial travel. Through your generosity, we can continue to build a program that will represent UMBC with pride across the nation.
Your donation will double!
Our minimum goal for this fundraiser is $3,000.00. Through the incredible generosity of one of our most faithful donors, we can match every donation you make up to $4,000.00! That means if you give $50, we'll turn it into $100! If you give $100, we'll turn it into $200! Please consider making a donation to reach our goal so we can use the full extent of our matching donations and travel to these amazing tournaments across the country.
Where will the money go?
The UMBC College of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences and the SGA Finance Board have graciously provided us with some funding - but we need more to make up the gap to attend two of our more expensive tournaments - Philadelphia and Duke.
Your gift today will help us pay for the registration fees for these tournaments and the lodging costs for staying multiple nights in downtown Philadelphia and Durham, NC. Any additional funds will be used to purchase trial materials, demonstrative exhibits, and other supplies we need to compete. Here's a cost breakdown for this project:
- Philadelphia registration: $500
- Philadelphia hotels: $2000
- Duke registration: $250
- Duke hotels: $1,250
- Total: $4,000.00
Your donation will help us continue our success and return to the National Championship Tournament in 2020!
