Help students making change to end dating violence and sexual assault among youth in Baltimore.

Project Summary

We're raising $2,500 to give 12 UMBC students the chance to learn about the reality of sexual assault and dating violence among teens and young adults, to speak with local professionals to find opportunities to make change, and to volunteer with organizations focused on helping survivors - all in the Baltimore area!

UMBC Alternative Spring Break?

Alternative Spring Break at UMBC is an entirely student-driven initiative working to solve problems in the Baltimore Community. Student trip leaders plan and arrange community activities, meetings with local professionals and officials, fundraising, travel, lodging, and meals for participants. The experience is also dictated on transcripts to demonstrate students' commitment to academic success!

Healthy Relationships Trip

The recent media attention to movements such as #metoo and #timeisup has spread awareness of sexual assault and dating violence. However, when it comes to research, interventions, and policy change, the adolescent and emerging adult populations are not given the attention they deserve. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 23% of females and 14% of males have experienced physical or sexual assault or stalking by the age of 18 - but we want better for our community.

This trip will help students learn how to make a difference first-hand by understanding the resources available and gaining knowledge of prevention strategies to make an impact in our community and protect vulnerable, but deserving, youth.

Your donations will help us cover:

  • Group lodging: $1,500
  • Groceries to prepare meals: $750
  • Uniformed T-shirts: $130
  • Orientation meal and snacks: $80
  • Journals and office supplies: $40
  • And, to help cover participation fees, providing activity supplies, and increasing the quality or quantity of food items available to UMBC student participants.
