Who we are!
UMBC's Model United Nations team (MUN) has been attending the National Model United Nations (NMUN) New York conference for the past 25 years, and this year we plan to do the same! We need your support to help us get there! Will you help us?
MUN is a long-established intellectual sport at UMBC. Started 25 years ago by faculty advisor Dr. Cynthia Hody and some dedicated students, MUN at UMBC has grown from one small 5-person team, going to one conference a school year - to having multiple conference teams per semester, one being 30+ students! At these competitions, we simulate United Nations committees, both historical and present, as well as simulating historical events and political cabinets. We represent either countries or historical figures, depending on the type of conference. We will be representing the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and Vietnam at this upcoming MUN conference!
Model UN's Impact!
MUN is the most interdisciplinary intellectual sport at UMBC. While housed under the Political Science department, it attracts students of all majors, ranging from Mechanical Engineering to Theater. The team collaborates with organizations within multiple departments at UMBC, such as collaborating with the Health Administration and Public Policy (HAPP) department to create a support system for other intellectual sport teams.
Learning diplomacy, practicing public speaking and effective communication, networking and making lifelong friends, all while diving into the intricacies of international relations and politics is what makes the Model UN team unique and makes these conferences a fulfilling learning experience.
Model UN creates well-rounded, educated individuals that are ready for the real world once they graduate. Some of our alumni are Fulbright Scholars, as well as some working for high-profile companies such as Morgan Stanley and GEICO. Some of our alumni go into foreign service, while some are on track to go to medical school. This broad assortment of careers that our students enter after graduation, not even to mention the alumni going to top-tier graduate schools, prove that Model UN prepares students for not only post-graduation, but the rest of their lives.
