Intellectual Sports are UMBC student organizations that empower students to take what they’re learning in the classroom and apply it in the world. This includes power skills like teamwork, problem solving, and critical thinking in addition to curriculum-specific knowledge from disciplines like engineering and the social sciences. As students work together, they refine their leadership and communication skills while benefiting from hands-on learning. In addition to their on-campus collaborations, at different times during the year Intellectual Sports members represent UMBC at off-campus competitions. While there, they test their mettle against other world class universities and bring attention to what it means to be a Retriever.
There are ten Intellectual Sports at UMBC:
Intellectual Sports rely on donations to perform equitably with our counterparts at private universities. UMBC students are extraordinary. When provided with adequate materials and preparation, they excel. A gift to the UMBC Foundation for the benefit of Intellectual Sports translates into cars (both miniature and human-sized), legislative proposals, drones, case demonstratives, RC airplanes, academically-informed debate, CTFs, and untold hours of growth, advancement, and connection. It also ensures that students have the ability to participate in regional events free from financial stressors or external limitations.
All contributions are administered by the UMBC Foundation, Inc., for the benefit of UMBC.
